I always like to get a fresh start on the new year, which means getting rid of old stuff we don't need and cleaning up around the house. Of course this includes getting rid of the Christmas tree. My daughter had fun making pictures with all the needles left behind. This is her pine needle man celebrating the new year in pine confetti.

The Balloon

I finally got to see a hot air balloon up close. In fact, I was inside of the balloon itself, which is where this photo was taken. The balloon is so large I could not get the entire thing in front of the lens, but I love this photo for its colors. Unfortunately, the wind was too much for a ride in the balloon, perhaps next time.

Pines

Pine trees come in many varieties. While I walking through a local garden I discovered a couple of interesting ones. I particularly liked this Long Leaf Pine.

It looks like a regular pine, but the needles are huge! I also love the color on this Japanese Pine Tree.

My Tiger - Camera Critters 20

Tiger stands guard outside our home. When my husband or I come home late at night he meows menacingly as if to ask, "Where have you been?" He will escort us to the house and then when you are safely inside he returns to the darkness where he stands guard once again. Any mouse or bat who dares enter our yard is killed and left by our front door. In return, all he asks for is a good rubbing behind the ears and some fish.

I found this cicada airing out his new wings. I usually find their shells lying around the garden, but I've never seen one coming out with its new wings like this before. I love his bright green color.

The Pollenator

I enjoy watching nature at work. Last year a squirrel stole the seeds out of a pumpkin that I left on my front steps. He must have dropped on by the fence, because I discovered a wild pumpkin plant growing there. My love for pumpkins has prevented me from removing the plant, even if it is out of place. Inside the flower is The Pollenator. Busy at work inside this beautiful yellow flower, he will help the flower to produce its fruit. Hopefully, I will get another pumpkin this year.

I was surprised to learn that there is a castle on Long Island. I discovered this information when I was invited to a wedding that took place there. The wedding, of course, was beautiful, as is the castle.

Once owned and built by Otto Hermann Kahn, the castle was built nearly a century ago. It was, at the time, and still remains the second largest residence ever built in America. It changes hands many times and was even abandoned and destroyed by vandals.

In 1984 is was purchased by a developer who restored the castle to it's original grandeur. for more information on Oheka Castle visit their site.

This is Tiger of the backyard jungle. He is just a kitten in this picture - now he is 9 years old! However, he is still the Tiger of the backyard, hunting and stalking everything from bats to mice. I didn't even know there were bats in my neighborhood until Tiger brought them home.

My daughter got a hamster from one of her friends. Although I've never considered getting a hamster for a pet he has been an interesting critter to learn from. My daughter lovingly named him Popcorn. Now that we have him I've been trying to learn more about hamsters. I believe that Popcorn is a Teddy Bear Hamster because of his long shaggy hair. I've also learned that hamsters carry food in their cheek pouches and store food. Popcorn loves broccoli and carrots. He picks certain foods from his bowl to hide behind his hamster wheel.

I unexpectedly found deer at the beach. I was able to get unusually close probably because people are feeding them. There was actually a sign there telling people not to feed them. I didn't have any food for them, but they were willing to pose for the camera.

The Fruits of Autumn

I love to pick apples and pumpkins in the fall. Here are some pictures from the farm I visited.

The pumpkins grew on the side of this hill. Fortunately, they had people there to bring the pumpkins uphill for you in a little drivable cart. I don't think I could have carried such big pumpkins uphill. However, the skies above were beautiful and the weather was just right for picking.

They had a good year for pumpkins. I couldn't believe the size of the stems on many of these pumpkins.I can't wait to carve this beauty into an awesome jack-o-lantern.

These apples are just perfect. I'll be doing a lot of snacking and baking with these.

The leaves are already beginning to change color. In another week or two the trees will be putting on a full display of autumn colors.

Praying Mantis

This mantis was very tolerant of the neighborhood children poking at him. The mantis turned his head from side to side looking back at all the children that were looking at him. He reached out his forearms which frightened the children a bit. After I got a few photos, he flew away. I don't usually find signs like this one. However, just past the sign I met up with a few chickens.

Birth of a Pumpkin

I was surprised to find a ripened pumpkin in August, but it was fun to watch it grow from a flower into a pumpkin. I hope it will live long enough to become a jack-o-lantern.

Lady Liberty

An interesting thing I learned about Lady Liberty is that she is wearing sandals, which in Roman times could only be worn by men who could vote. The fact that she is a woman wearing sandals and that she is walking forward is a bold statement, especially since this was given to the USA as a gift from France in a time when women were not able to vote.

I was confused at first whether or not these were daisies or black-eyed susans. After some research I found that the two do look similar but the susans have a protruding center while the daisies do not. That makes them unmistakable and pretty.
